Self-reliant Medicine

America’s state of health is characterized by an epidemic of chronic diseases pitted against a vast array of symptom-relieving pills.  Long ago Hippocrates said that the very symptoms of an illness are the body’s means of healing itself.  This he called the healing crisis.  He warned that suppressing healing crises would lead to chronic disease and death.  This book presents an overview of the principles of natural healing.  It is written to inspire patients to examine their lives and discover ways to improve their health.  In Self-Reliant Medicine the doctor teaches the patient principles of health.  In turn the patient participates in understanding and caring for his or her body.

Come Now, And Let Us Reason Together

2ND EDITION
VOLUME 1  â€‹- CHAPTERS 1-20
A MEDICAL TEXTBOOK FOR PATIENTS

The practice of medicine has gone awry.  Intending to relieve suffering, Modern Medicine has focused on the administration of drugs to suppress symptoms.  Hippocrates taught long ago that the body manifests the healing process through symptoms.  When drugs are used to block the healing effects of symptoms, indeed, patients do feel better, but they remain sick.  As we study how the body is designed, we discover that the body maintains a precise balance.  Deviation from that balance eventually leads to disease.  When we assist the body in restoring its optimal balance, the body responds by healing itself.  In order to help ourselves heal, we must study how to take care of and respect our bodies.  Each person needs to discover the pattern of living which is optimal for his or her health.  Ideally, primary physicians should be partners in this quest.  When our bodies cry for help, we should seek to identify factors contributing to illness and take corrective action.  We should initiate improvements in health habits and correlate them with the healing process.  To be healthy takes courage and self-discipline.  This second edition has been re-written to make the field of medicine understandable to persons without prior medical training.  Its purpose is to empower you to discover your strengths and weaknesses and live within the boundaries of good health.  This approach to health is what I call Self-Reliant Medicine.  Come now, and let us reason together.

Come Now, And Let Us Reason Together

2nd EDITION
VOLUME 2 - CHAPTERS 21-30
A MEDICAL TEXTBOOK FOR PATIENTS

In the first edition of Come Now, and Let Us Reason Together, I commented on excerpts from Harrison’s Principles of Internal Medicine.  In Volume I of the 2nd edition I attempted to summarize the textbook readings with supplementary explanations.  In my commentary I introduced concepts of Self-Reliant Medicine.  In this 2nd edition of Volume 2, I have reduced the number of chapters and have attempted to help you the reader reach a better understanding of how the body works, why diseases occur, and what you can do to be healthy.  The concept of natural healing was described by Hippocrates long ago.  Over time the body accumulates material which I call biological clutter.  This includes atherosclerosis, obesity, diabetic retinopathy, and Alzheimer’s disease.  The universal healing process used by the body is the elimination of unwanted waste.  Examples include the common cold, bacterial infections, autoimmune diseases, and cancer.  Modern Medicine is good at making a diagnosis and administering medication to suppress symptoms.  As a result, doctors are able to extend the lives of people suffering from chronic diseases.  What happens when you take an active role in healing yourself?  You eliminate habits, activities, and foods that are harmful and unclean.  You observe how your body responds.  You tolerate symptoms of healing with minimal medication and allow your body to excrete material through the skin, respiratory tract, kidneys, and bowels.  There are many unanswered questions.  Personal medical research needs to be done. Let us now continue exploring concepts of Self-Reliant Medicine.
